I’m studying for my new life… Having brought my son up on my own for the last 17 years, I need to think about what’s ahead for me and how I want my life to look. That’s why I chose everything I love in the same place… Visual Communication and Design at Perth UHI.
For years I helped people run their own businesses, then I set up my own. I had a wee shop in Rait Antiques Centre where I sold interesting and quirky things. I also renovated furniture and made clocks. Then I move to a shop in Ocean Terminal called “The Scottish Design Exchange” but it was so badly run I moved out after a year. There I sold candles, clocks and coat hooks made out of anything I can find that is interesting and would normally be thrown out.
My present business is smaller scale so I can concentrate on studying and also stay self-employed. I still have my clock making which is “ticking” along! I still get commissions. Plus I buy stock from auctions and charity shops and sell them on EBay.
Because of my love of “upcycling” (not keen on that word), I’m called Magpie. This happened when I was doing Duncan of Jordanstone’s Portfolio Production course.
I’ve come home at last. For the first time in my life I feel I have found my feet. I just returned from Paris and after a few weeks there, I know I want to be come a “proper” designer.
So, here’s to the future…
